Where to start practicing yoga? Start with theory

Understanding what yoga is can help you select the best practice for you. Yoga can be done in a variety of ways and in many different religious and philosophical contexts. From the beginning of yoga’s development till the present, there have only been four branches:

• Jnana (Raja) Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, and Hatha Yoga. Every style and practice, old and modern, is a member of one of these enormous families. Depending on the practice you choose, both the outcome and your emotional state will change. If you avoid philosophical and theological topics, then:

• Hatha – This practice uses meditation (concentration), breathing exercises (pranayamas), static postures (asanas), and various positions of the body and hands (mudras) to help accomplish the desired results (emotional wellness, consciousness purification, or improved physical shape, for example).

• Karma yoga is a discipline where you simply carry out any deeds without desire, or, to put it another way, disinterestedly. Particularly useful for individuals who do not aim to meditate is the practice.

• Jnana yoga –Through meditation and particular mental exercises designed to promote meditation, you can reach the outcome you’ve discussed with your guru.

• Bhakti-yoga – Complete mental and emotional engrossment in this one objective leads to enlightenment (absolute devotion to yoga’s highest goal). Once the beginner has a general understanding of this structure, they can select the practice that they find most enjoyable. This is the first and most important step in beginning a yoga practice because yoga is more than just doing physical activity for a set amount of time to lose weight. For many years and decades, people have done yoga. Consult a trained teacher if you are unsure of the type of yoga that would be most beneficial for you.
