Mount Elbrus

Part of the Caucasus Mountains, Mount El’brus is situated in southwest Russia. Both in Russia and throughout all of Europe, it is the highest point. The Prielbrusye National Park includes it. El’brus is one of the seven highest mountains on each of the seven continents, making it one of the Seven Summits of the World.

The age of the extinct volcano El’brus is around 2.5 million years. Its most recent eruption is dated to 50 CE. Due to the mountain’s twisted shape, ancient inhabitants called it Strobilus, which is Latin for “pine cone.”

contains two peaks

It features two peaks that each reach a height of more than 5,590 meters (18,000 feet). El’brus has a chilly climate in general. Even in the height of summer, evening lows hover around -8°C (18°F). Above the snow line, it gets more colder. There are 22 glaciers atop El’brus, and a large portion of the mountain is covered in ice. Rivers close by are nourished by water from glacier melt. The Russian army made the first ascent of the mountain’s east top in 1829 while on a research mission. Climbers made it to the mountain’s highest point, the west summit, in 1874.

El’brus is become a significant tourist destination. Skiing and hiking are the two main reasons people visit the mountain. The peak of El’brus is extremely difficult to reach and should only be tried during specific seasons of the year. El’brus, however, is regarded as one of the Seven Summits that is simplest to climb because to a cable car system that transports climbers to an elevation of 3,658 meters (12,500 feet). In spite of the fact that most climbers reach the summit in less than a week, El’brus still has a high death rate—about 30 per year—relative to the number of climbers who attempt to reach the top.
