Native Americans History

Before Christopher Columbus and the European settlers arrived, there were people living in the United States. We refer to these people as Native Americans. Indigenous Peoples

Indigenous peoples are the original inhabitants of a place. They were the first settlers, according to this. The indigenous peoples and civilizations of the United States are known as Native Americans.

American Indians

These individuals are sometimes known as Indians or American Indians. This is so that Columbus wouldn’t have imagined he had come all the way to India when he first set foot in America. He referred to the natives as Indians, and the term persisted for a while.

Where did they live?

North and South America were both home to native Americans. Native Americans lived in Alaska, Hawaii, and the rest of the continental United States. There were several tribes and cultures in various places. The Plains Indians, notably the Comanche and Arapaho tribes, dwelt in the center of the nation. Tribes like the Cherokee and Seminole lived in the Southeast region of the nation.

Tribes

Native Americans were divided into tribes or nations based on where they resided and aspects of their culture, such as their language, religion, and customs. Smaller tribes occasionally belonged to a larger tribe or country. As far as historians can determine, these tribes were quite tranquil before Columbus and other Europeans arrived.

How do we know about their history?

Since the Native Americans did not record or write down their history, we must rely on other sources to learn about it. By unearthing artifacts like tools and weapons, archaeologists are able to uncover a wealth of information about earlier societies. The early European settlers’ recordings account for a large portion of what is known. The customs and tales that have been passed down within the tribes from generation to generation can also teach us.

Native Americans Today

Some of the original American Indians’ descendants now reside on reservations. These are lands reserved exclusively for Native Americans. This aids in preserving their cultural legacy. But just about 30% of people reside on reservations. Like everyone else, the rest of them reside outside of reservations.
